Is There A Connection Between Tongue Scraping & Weight Loss

Clinical studies have indicated tongue scraping significantly reduces and removes oral bacteria from the crevices of all areas the tongue. This helps reduce gum disease and halitosis but there are many more reasons to tongue scrape.

Studies are still being explored between tongue scraping and weight loss. How does this work you ask?

1. You experience the flavors of your food.

When we can taste food - we can sometimes control eating it slower and chewing it properly. Proper digestion begins with taste and salivation. If you don’t take steps to remove the toxic mucus build up on your tongue, your taste buds can become blocked.

If you cannot taste your food this may lead to false cravings or an inability to recognize the taste of food. Removing the mucus build up on the surface of your tongue will open up its pores and better expose your taste buds. This allows for greater enjoyment of food flavors. As a result, your body digest and assimilates food better which may allow you to eat less.

2. You improve your digestive health.

In Ayurveda practice, proper digestion is the foundation of health. Digestion begins with taste so it’s important to remove toxins that may obstruct optimal functioning. Scraping also activates saliva production and promotes agni (the body’s digestive fire) to help with digestion throughout the day.

3. If you are tasting your food & firing up digestion you eat less and might crave less.

If you are tasting your food and your food is now being digested properly your bodily should be able to process and absorb minerals and nutrients optimally. When you taste food and are no longer having cravings, the result should be weight loss.

This is not medical advice and the studies are still being completed but preliminary data suggests better oral health results in better weight management.Â
